Your tour starts from the the corner of the famous Gothic structure Loggia del Bigallo that overlooks the Piazza Duomo, one of the most visited places in Florence. Arrive 10 minutes early to meet your guide there. From here your tour will begin towards the historic complex of monuments that define Florence.
As you enter the famed square, behold the iconic structure of Santa Maria del Fiore , the main church of Florence and the dome that covers the cathedral Brunelleschi Dome made by Filippo Brunelleschi , one of the founders of Renaissance. It is still a wonder as to how a short-tempered goldsmith with no architectural knowledge was able to create one of the best pieces defining the Renaissance era.
Follow your guide further to see the Baptistery of San Giovanni , a minor basilica with its golden doors, the Porta del Paradiso or Gates of Paradise. You will see the Giotto’s Bell Tower , a freestanding campanile which is a part of this impressive complex of monuments.
Continue following your guide through Via Calzaiuoli where you’ll see the Orsanmichele Church with its Italian Gothic architecture. Crossing that you’ll reach the Mercatodella Paglia or the Straw Market . This 16th century open gallery is a market where you’ll find luxurious goods, statues and many fountains. The Porcellino is the famous bronze fountain of boar made by PietroTacca. Rubbing the nose of the boar and tossing a coin in the fountain is said to bring good luck!
You’ll also see the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence, famous for its jewellery shops. From there your guide will take you to the Piazza della Signoria, the center of major political happenings and uprisings in Florence since the 14th century. Here you’ll see some of the most stunning renaissance work on display like the Fountain of Neptune made by Ammannati who stands as the centre-piece of the great fountain. You’ll also see the Loggia deiLanz, another open gallery of famous statues situated in a corner of the Piazza della Signoria. Here you’ll find Benvenuto Cellini’s bronze sculpture of Perseus Beheading the Medusa and Rape of the Sabine by Gianbologna.
Overlooking Piazza della Signoria is the magnificent Palazzo Vecchio. Here you’ll find the focal point of the city, the Arnolfo Tower , fortified structure towering over the city of Florence.
Your guide will end the tour at the same place where you started, the Loggia del Bigallo.
