Florence Walking Tour
Your tour begins from Loggia del Bigallo. Catch a glimpse of the Piazza Duomo, overlooking the meeting point. From here your tour kick starts towards the historic complex of monuments that define Florence.
Up first will be the iconic structure of the main church of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore and the acclaimed Brunelleschi dome made by one of the founders of Renaissance, Filippo Brunelleschi. Next, you see the Baptistery of San Giovanni famous for its golden doors, the Porta del Paradiso or ‘Gates of Paradise’. You also see the freestanding campanile Giotto’s Bell Tower.
Next, continue with your guide to Via Calzaiuoli. Soak your eyes in the beauty of the Italian gothic architecture of Orsanmichele Church. Walk past that and you reach Mercatodella Paglia or the Straw Market showcasing luxurious goods, statues and many fountains. Don’t forget to find the Porcellino bronze fountain! Rubbing the nose of the bronze boar and tossing a coin in the fountain is said to bring good luck!
Moving on, you reach the oldest bridge of Florence, Ponte Vecchio, famous for its jewellery shops. Follow your guide from there to Piazza della Signoria. Here you’ll find one of the best renaissance art works on display like the Fountain of Neptune by Ammannati. Head over to another square, Loggia deiLanz at Piazza della Signoria to see more famous statues like Perseus Beheading the Medusa and Rape of the Sabine.
From Signoria, head towards Palazzo Vecchio to see the Arnolfo Tower , the focal piece of Florence that towers over the city.
Uffizi Gallery Tour
After finishing your 1.30 hour of Florence walking tour, head over to the Uffizi Gallery Museum for a guided tour. One of the world’s most famous gallery museums, it runs a close second to Vatican when it comes to safekeeping significant collections of art and paintings.
Amongst an ambitious collection full of masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello, Giotto, Cimabue, Masaccio, the museum’s favourite two are Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Allegory of Spring. Listen closely to your guide narrating the meanings behind these masterpieces, like the ‘Birth of Venus’ is a symbol of Renaissance Neo-platonic aesthetics that idealises beauty as an expression of purity and spirituality.
